Hard Row To Hoe winery, Lake Chelan WA
Meet winemakers/owners Don and Judy Phelps and do some barrel tasting.
We have the chance to visit with Don and Judy Phelps at Hard Row to Hoe winery just outside Manson on Lake Chelan WA. Twice a year they open up their barrel room and sample some of their future releases. I had never been to this winery before so we headed for Lake Chelan on this crisp but sunny November day to check out the tasting room we had heard so much about – the story and local history behind their name is a good one as you will see – and try some of their wines.
Don and Judy are friendly, and engaging people, they make their guests feel totally welcome, without even trying, it just comes naturally to them. For the barrel tasting, we had the opportunity to try some Primitivo, a varietal originally from Southern Italy that is very similar to Zinfandel but with some unique characteristics of its own. I had never tried this varietal before and really enjoyed it! To sum it up, it was a very worthwhile and enjoyable visit.
