Walla Walla '09 Holiday Barrel Tasting
Rick Small, at Woodward Canyon, makes more than great wine.
At the Holiday Barrel Tasting in the Walla Walla area in early December, we stopped in at Woodward Canyon to find Rick Small donning an apron and baking his fabulous olive bread while Darcey was greeting guests as they arrived. They had quite the gourmet spread of Hors d'Oeuvres to go with their wines they were serving at the tasting.
All of the Woodward Canyon wines are fantastic, but my favorite is always the Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon.
I've watched their facility (actually in Lowden, just west of Walla Walla) grow over the past 25 years from a Quonset hut type building, to a larger production building with a separate "farmhouse" tasting room and offices. And now they have a brand new building that houses an event facility.
Rick and Darcy, besides being icons in the industry, and extremely talented at producing amazing wines, are a very gracious couple. If you get a chance, go visit their winery in Walla Walla. You won't regret it.
